The Back of the Front - On Nita Tandon’s Fingerprint | 2010 | Installation art
Nita Tandon’s Fingerprint addresses the discrepancy between digital graphic and the uniqueness of an analogue image on the levels of content and form. The artist recreates an analogue image of her digitalized fingerprint by pressing each pixel as a square of plasticine onto a sheet of glass. The fingerprint constituting the whole image thus remains on each of its parts so that the front of the image becomes the back of it and vice versa.
The procedure is a definitory game played with the viewer, who must decide how he/she defines analogue/digital, two-dimensional/three-dimensional, front/back. Caught in this contradictory sphere of analogue and digital, the fingerprint, the very symbol of identity, becomes the object of questions about uniqueness.
